Although only 21 at the time of his St Mary’s arrival, Yago Falqué had already passed through the books of many of Europe’s top clubs, being repeatedly capped by Spain at levels up to U-21. Tottenham played him in a handful of the Europa League games, while he was on loan from Juventus. They then signed him, but immediately loaned him to Southampton.
He was billed as an “attacking midfielder” on the club website, where Nigel Adkins praised his versatility and suggested that “the supporters will be excited by what he can do on the pitch.”
The manager could not have been more wrong. After starting just one game, during which he failed to impress and was substituted, Yago Falqué was never seen in the Saints’ colours again. He did find an element of success however, later in Italy, three times finishing the season with a league goal total in double figures, twice for Torino and once for Genoa.
