Whitechapel born, Franz Euscher the son of German immigrants – who later changed his name to Frank – gained his first footballing education with the local Tottenham Unity side prior to joining the Royal Engineers in 1902. By the time of his eighteenth birthday he was making his name as a clever left-winger and quickly promoted to the Army representative side. By 1903 he had transferred regiments and was engaged with the 2^nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers, a stronger army side containing fellow Army representative and F Coleman. Frank continued to impress in late 1903 playing against Arsenal, Corinthians, Cambridge University among others, together with another future Saint Edgar Bluff.

Frank was now drawing attention from several Southern League sides and joined Millwall and played in several League games before being offered, together with Coleman, a trial game for Saints in a Western League match at Bristol Rovers on 18 April 1904. It did not go well, overwhelmed 5-0, both players failed to shine and returned home. Frank’s army career soon ended, and he found himself in the ranks of Enfield, where he was described by the Middlesex Gazette as a

“tall fresh coloured youth of good physical build”.

He would spend two seasons at Enfield before deciding to emigrate to Canada and join his family*. A year later he returned home and took up a career in hairdressing and despite his German heritage in March 1915 re-joined the Royal Engineers as a corporal in the Electrical Telegraph Corps initially based at Newark. He was wounded in France and discharged in July 1916. Frank resumed his career in Edmonton and enjoyed another sporting challenge playing Bowls for the Downhills club. The 1921 census listed him as a disabled soldier.

*Euscher’s family his parents and siblings all left London in 1906 to emigrate to America via Ellis Island New York, Frank although deciding to travel to Canada in 1907 later decided to return to Edmonton in 1908 on the birth of his daughter.
