When he arrived at The Dell in his late twenties, Harry Hadley had 190 Football League matches behind him, having twice featured in sides that topped Division II (West Brom in 1902 and Forest in 1907). And during his First Division days with the Albion, he had been capped by England.
An energetic yet methodical wing-half, he was fairly regular in Saints’ patchy Southern League season of 1907-08 but missed most of their run to the FA Cup semi-final.
And then he was on his way, completing his playing career in non-league football but then managing post-war, at several clubs, notably Merthyr Town, where he had four spells.
