Signed from his home-town club in County Durham, Septimus Blair failed to live up to expectations. He struggled to settle and, after just one first-team start, was allowed to depart without fulfilling his contract. Returning to the north-east, he worked as a boilermaker, while playing for South Shields in the Northern Alliance and was then employed by William Pickersgill and Sons in the Sunderland shipyards for over 30 years. He was awarded the BEM in 1943 (see scrapbook section).
